Circuit Judge R. Brent Elliott’s “From the Bench” is a series of articles designed to provide the public with a better understanding of the judicial system and changes in the law. The last few articles explained the qualifications of care providers under our juvenile system. This month I am shifting gears completely.
The unexpected death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has created great political fervor. Nearly every national news broadcast touches upon some issue related to his absence and the selection of his replacement. The Missouri Supreme Court also has an unexpected vacancy due to the untimely passing of Judge Richard B. Teitelman. I believe Missourians will find the process of filling Judge Teitelman’s vacancy far less vitriol than that of his Federal counterpart. My next few articles will discuss the current make-up of the Missouri Supreme Court and the process by which we fill a vacancy.
