“State panel wants Ohio courts to stop jailing people because they can’t afford bail”

A state panel wants to overhaul court practices that jail people simply because they can’t afford bail, according to a report the panel released Tuesday.

The special committee of the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission wants the state to establish a system that determines who is released based on a person’s likelihood of committing new crimes or skipping court — not their ability to pay for their freedom.
